Digital Tourism

This guide to the Sinulog festival is part of the Digital Tourism program of InnoPub Media, a new media startup based in Cebu, and Philippine telecommunications leader Smart Communications, Inc.

The Digital Tourism program harnesses mobile technology to enhance the experience of tourists by giving them accurate and relevant information through devices that they carry around with them: mobile phones and tablets.

The project involves 1) the publication of ebooks and mobile phone apps to serve as guides to tourists and 2) the use of special tourism markers that contain quick response (QR) codes and near-field communication (NFC) tags to trigger the delivery of information about a specific tourism site or structure.

The program was launched in Cebu and is now also in Ilo-ilo. It is set for expansion in other areas of the country.

The program is supported by the Department of Tourism and various local government units in the provinces of Cebu and Iloilo. Other partners of the program include Cebu Pacific, Marco Polo Plaza Cebu, The Islands Group and LG.

The Digital Tourism program is a recipient of a Resolution of Commendation unanimously passed by the Cebu City Council on mass motion in January 2012.
